Lan Jaenicke
Lan Jaenicke founded her eponymous line with the idea that luxury should elevate the everyday, as clothing not only accompanies us through life’s experiences, but can help define them. To that end, to accompany us well, essential elements to the brand are movement, versatility, and resilience.
Freedom of movement is central to Lan’s design philosophy. We need fluidity as we navigate what lies ahead. She has heightened awareness of a garment’s negative space - internally, the openness between body and fabric, and externally, between fabric and environment. When clothing allows for us to flow, we feel capable, active, ready. Lan embraces the dynamic.
For versatility, simplicity must be espoused. Lan’s designs strip away the superfluous, reducing to essential shapes. The resulting purity that is achieved allows for all pieces in her collections to converse happily. Once lines, silhouettes, and colors have all been simplified, they come to share a common language.
To support the evolution of fabrics over time, and to allow for fluidity of movement, the craftsmanship underpinning the garment must be robust enough to ensure resilience. All Lan Jaenicke pieces are handmade and held to the highest production standards, from structural woven cashmere outerwear to shimmering silk dresses.
Lan believes that natural materials are the best suited to accompany us on our path. Cashmere, silk, linen, cotton integrate into our lives ideally. They breathe with us. They develop honestly through wear, evolving gently over time as we do.
Meet
The Designer
Before becoming a designer, Lan had studied mathematics at University College London. This study created a foundation for understanding proportion, especially the golden ratio, and for problem solving, both of which are active parts of her design process.
She launched her namesake label beginning with a small collection of woven cashmere coats and jackets. From the beginning, Lan sought to create clothing that combined refinement with comfort, and exceptional materials with a sense of practicality. A sensibility that continues to define the brand today.
Lan designs intuitively, artistically, allowing the character of a material to guide her creation process. Engaging with the tactile, physical qualities of a fabric is a departure point for the design that follows. She believes that we feel most alive when our senses scintillate; handling cashmere, or feeling silk against skin, are singular experiences.
Her work emphasizes proportion, texture, construction, and innovative details that reveal themselves over time. Her inspiration comes directly from her life as she lives it. She envisions solutions, then realizes them in fabric.
