The Lan Jaenicke approach begins with material. Cashmere, silk, linen, and other natural fibers are selected for their quality, character, and ability to evolve with wear. Rather than beginning with a predetermined silhouette and fitting a material to it, Lan often allows the qualities of the fabric to inform the design itself.
Each garment is developed through a process of draping, refinement, and careful construction. Proportion and movement are considered alongside the body, allowing a piece to feel sculptural without sacrificing ease.
Details are intentional and often understated: considered finishing, handwork, tailoring, and carefully selected trims and hardware give each piece its character. The craftsmanship is not meant to announce itself. It is felt in the way a garment falls, moves, and wears.
The atelier also explores more intuitive approaches to patternmaking, including zero-waste techniques that consider the full length and width of a textile. Shape can emerge through folds, ties, gathers, and construction rather than unnecessary cutting, creating garments that are thoughtful both in design and in their use of material.
For Lan, craftsmanship is inseparable from longevity. A well-made garment should not be defined by the season in which it was introduced. It should have the capacity to remain relevant, become familiar, and take on new meaning with time.

The Atelier is central to the Lan Jaenicke experience.
Located in San Francisco’s historic Jackson Square, the Atelier is a combination retail space and workshop dedicated to creation: design, development, and construction all occur within the brick-walled 19th Century building. It is where garments are draped, fitted, refined, and finished; and where Lan and her Atelier team work on collections, and with clients on made-to-order and private commissions.
Lan Jaenicke deliberately maintains the human touch in its production - all pieces are made by hand in small quantities. The result is a collection that has a sense of place while designed to move far beyond it.
Walking into Atelier Lan Jaenicke is a full sensory experience – aside from the visual engagement of the collection, and the quiet focus of the Atelier team at work, permeating the air is the scent of our natural house candle, handmade in California. Our signature fragrance, Ink, also enriches the atmosphere.
Beyond a traditional retail environment, the Atelier offers an intimate view into the production process: rolls of doubleface cashmere and silks neatly arranged; tailors sewing, cutting, and steaming; paper patterns, collectively hanging; a swath of fabric wrapping a form as design takes on dimension.
From this flurry of activity - the selection of materials to the development of a silhouette and the final fitting - new pieces emerge.
Appointments allow for an immersive experience of the collection, with Lan’s personalized attention to proportion, fabrication, styling, and individual needs.
Maison Lan Jaenicke, in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights neighborhood, serves as the brand’s boutique, a curated expression of the Lan Jaenicke world.
