Jewel Tones: A Lan Jaenicke Lapidary

Beneath winter's long gray skies and rain, jewel colors bring radiance back to the soul and the self. With their inner glow and saturated hues, gems have long been associated with magical and medicinal effects. Their properties are historically compiled in lapidaries--beautiful manuscripts featuring stones and their believed attributes. Emerging from both the medieval east and west, lapidaries are themselves gorgeous works of art, featuring calligraphic scripts and illustrations in stained-glass hues. One foundational lapidary is Marbode's De Lapidibus (On Stones), its poetic text written by the Bishop of Rennes in the 11th century.

As seen here, lapidaries interweave jewels with with astrological and botanical lore as well, associating stones with particular constellations and plants. Seeking to illuminate these last weeks of winter, we offer a Lan Jaenicke Lapidary in radiant hues. May it bring a little glow to you and your world.
