The Poetic Thread: Lan Jaenicke Series No. 22

The Bamford Long Doubleface cashmere coat in Tobacco

An artist stands above a landscape of mist, gazing into a dreamlike range of mountains and sky. One of the most iconic images of the Romantic age, Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog symbolizes all 19th century Romantic culture held dear:  the individualism of the artist, the sublimity of nature, and, of course, a lyrical sensibility—all embodied by the Wanderer atop a peak in his dark longcoat. This season, our new collection, Series 22, offers a modern take on Romanticism with poetic silhouettes, luxurious textures, and dramatic tonality.

The Poet Shirt in Undyed Japanese wool gauze with pearl buttons.

Leading the collection is our Poet Shirt, a lyrical piece with Byronic flair. Made by hand in our Atelier, it is crafted of Japanese wool gauze. The material’s light weight enables the piece to float on the wearer, and the transparency of the loose weave allows light to play through. Gathered sleeves cascade in sloping pillowing forms, finishing in petal-like cuffs. Pearl buttons add luminous sheen. A truly artful piece, available in hues of Houndstooth and Black, as well as Undyed.

The Painter Shirt in Japanese wool gauze in Natural and Olive

The Painter Shirt is sister to the Poet. This utterly refined, fluid piece is also handmade at our Atelier of Japanese wool gauze. The silhouette has graceful volume, but with a classic straight shoulder. Gathered sleeve cuffs recall shirting of centuries past. And black, silk-covered buttons add an understated, elegant touch. Available in Olive, Natural, and Undyed.

We’re excited to debut a new collection of luxurious Doubleface Cashmere coats, which we imagine being worn by our sartorial Wanderer. For this series, the Bamford, Bamford Long, Winston, and Malvern are offered in our luminous cream Undyed cashmere, and the Bamford, Bamford Long, Winston Long, and Mitchley Long are offered in darker, earthier colors—sable tones like Olive, Tobacco, and Undyed Natural. The decadence of Double-face cashmere elevates the Bamford’s oversized, blazer-inspired cut to new heights, and can be paired with a leather obi-belt for even greater elegance. The Malvern, our long, double-breasted wrap coat, feels like a soft embrace in Doubleface. It can be worn open for dramatic flair or tied close.

Whether drawn to the mystery of shadow or radiance of light, pairing these dramatic coats with our new Japanese wool gauze shirting offers up myriad possibilities for tonal layering. We love the graphic contrast of the Poet Shirt in Houndstooth or Black under bright cream Undyed cashmere; or the tone-on-tone richness of Tobacco brown cashmere over the grey Houndstooth Poet Shirt or Olive Painter Shirt. The longer cuff of these shirts also creates an elevated moment--extending beyond the coat arm, they create the look of a French cuff, but with a more feminine, graceful feel.

The X Scarf in Undyed Doubleface cashmere and detail of handcrafted porcelain buttons. The Long Scarf in Undyed Natural Doubleface cashmere.

Our Doubleface cashmere offerings include two gorgeous new scarves. The artful X Scarf in Undyed cashmere is a stunning and singular accessory. It lights the face with a striking white frame, and is detailed with two handcrafted porcelain buttons commissioned by Lan Jaenicke from San Francisco ceramic artist Len Carella. The Long Scarf in Undyed Natural Doubleface is a decadent, voluminous piece made for piling atop cashmere coats and jackets. We’ve cut both scarves according to the natural width or length of the fabric, resulting in zero waste.

The Poet Vest Coat in Navy.

We find fall the most Romantic season, a time for wandering in the cool of the open air, along quiet paths piled with leaves, and for gathering with loved ones. It’s allowing time for channeling your own creativity, for its so often in quietude that inspiration sparks. In that spirit, we offer our Poet Vest Coat. This perfect autumn piece has ample folds of billowing cashmere, with a belt that gathers them, enhancing its volume. Untied, the flow of the Vest is accentuated. To be worn on its own, or paired with the Poet Shirt for a highly layered look.

With Series 22, we invite you to express your inner artist, and encourage you to wander. As the poet and painter Etel Adnan wrote of walking Mount Tamalpais, “About three in the afternoon, the mountain starts to swell. The colors and the shadows sharpen. The volumes come into fullness. It all looks so mysterious.”
